I. Two new Saturday classes at Milo Arts - Tribal Level One & Beginner Poi!

II. Upcoming shows

III. Comfest performance opportunities

* * * * * * * * * *
I. New Saturday classes

I am so excited to announce that I am going to start offering Saturday classes! I have had so many students with Wednesday night scheduling conflicts that it seems like the right time to offer something new. Here are the details -

Tribal Basics Level One - Saturday, 11 AM - 12 PM, starts March 29

This introductory level class uses full-body warm-ups, Tribal Fusion muscle training, and Improvisational Tribal drills to help you develop an understanding of Tribal Style Bellydance.

Beginner Poi - Saturday, 12 PM - 1 PM, starts March 29

Pacific Island-style poi swinging has been incorporated into everything from performance to ritual to raves. Learn the basics of swinging poi in this easy to follow class. Note: I will bring all the poi I have, but I can't guarantee equipment for the whole class. If you're thinking about coming, please contact me so I can tell you what supplies you might need.

Both classes will be offered in a four-week session starting March 29 and ending April 26, with no classes on April 19. You can pre-pay for a four-week session for $45, or drop in for $15 a class. As always, if you're currently taking classes with me, you can drop-in to any level you've completed for more practice for $5 a class.

Current Wednesday classes will continue as scheduled.

II. Upcoming Shows

March 22 - Tonight! Assumed Identity Benefit at East Village, 10 PM. Sacred Shimmy will be performing with an incredible line-up of Columbus talent. We will be debuting a new drum duet, a new song by Sai Baba Musical Kaleidoscope (Zach's electronic music project), and a new choreography. You can't beat that!

April 5 - Beledi Extravaganza in Saint Mary's, OH. More details available at ohioarts.org under "Beledi Extravanza."

III. Comfest Performance Opportunities

One of Sacred Shimmy's favorite performance spots all year is the Community Festival in Goodale Park during the last weekend in June. This year I will be putting together a beginner-level choreography for any students interested in dancing with Sacred Shimmy on stage. Rehearsals will run on Wednesday nights at 8 PM from May 7 - June 25, and will be priced as regular classes. If you can plan to attend a minimum of 6 of these 8 rehearsals, you're welcome to participate! Clear your calendars now, and I'll shoot you more details as the process unfolds.

Hope to see you soon!

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Just a few quick announcements about what's going on with Sacred Shimmy for the fall ...

I. September Classes

I've been hearing rumblings for a while from gals who are anxious to start shimmying but having trouble working Wednesdays into their schedules. To quiet the discontent, I am happy to announce a new Level One Tribal Bellydance class - Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM, starting on September 4. The cost for the month of September is $45. If you prefer to pay each week, you can drop-in for $15 a class.

Wednesday night classes will remain the same. Ongoing Level One at 7:00 PM, and Level Two at 8:00 PM.

All classes are held in Studio 103 at Milo Arts. www.miloarts.com

II. September Performances

Our beloved Andrea from Sacred Shimmy will be dancing her booty off at the Ohio Renaissance Festival as part of the Naughty Navels three times a day for the next seven weeks. Don't miss this fun and constantly-changing act, and drop a few bucks in Andrea's basket! www.renfestival.com

Meanwhile, the troupe will be heating things up at the Ohio Lesbian Festival on September 8. Stop by our workshop Tribal Bellydance 101 at 2:45, or indulge your voyeuristc side at our evening show. This special performance also features erotic dance instructor Emily Davis and everyone's favorite danger act, fire spinning. (Also, Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion, one of my favorite live shows ever, is performing that evening!) www.ohiolba.com

Stay tuned for our October update, including details on Sacred Shimmy's 1st Annual Halloween Party, and our slots at the International Festival.

Also, fellow drummer Bob laid down some sweet solos to go over the rhythms I had already worked out, and I did a little bit, too. Unfortunately it is not going to be finished and mastered due to productional hang ups. It is too bad because the raw material is there, samples added, ney added, synth added, but it cannot be completed as real tracks and over and done with. So sorry to anybody who might like to hear it and dance to it. Maybe in the future Sacred Shimmy will have some actual studio produced tracks.

Hello Dancers and musicians,
We wanted to give you all the updates for Tribal Quest Midwest

Columbus, Ohio
October 27, 28, 29, 2006

Gypsy Caravan (OR)
Zafira Dance Company (PA)
Urban Tribal (CA)
Raquy and the Cavemen (NY)
Judy Piazza (MI)
John Compton from Hahbi'Ru (CA)
Mizna with Jeff Rees, Doug Shafer, and JD Devros (OR)

Tribal Quest festivals features workshops with the masters and innovators of
Tribal Bellydance, including Folkloric, Tribal Fusion and other dance forms!
There are also several music workshops on playing various instruments such as
drums, percussion, strings, mijwiz, zils...
Workshops start Friday at noon and continue through Sunday afternoon. Friday
night is a gathering with a light supper and a showcase highlighting
participating dancers from around the country and a dance and music jam with
Raquy and the Cavemen- have you heard them? Wow… great drumming and energy!
Saturday night is a blow out show in a theatre with the teachers, and following
the show, an afterparty with more yummy food, schmoozing, music, and dancing!
This is a great way to meet your fellow dancers and get to jam, and try out all
your new moves!
And shopping! Oh yeah... shopping with vendors and costume designers selling
their wares --ethnic jewelry, custom designed costumes, music.
We have gotten a few different locations to take care of us for the workshops
and shows and parties, all within a few block radius so that we can walk from
each place—very convenient!

So how cool is that?

We have received many people interested in volunteering- thank you so much in
advance! I truly appreciate your desire to help out, especially at this first
festival in Columbus. We need the help!

But we also need you to get registered! Some of you are waiting until the last
minute, and that causes a dilemma. As the sponsor, I need to know you are coming
and want to take the workshops these fabulous teachers are offering! And come
to the show and parties too.

But not enough of you have registered.
So…
If you can sign up for the workshops before Friday, September 22, then we will
know if the festival can continue!

You can register by Paypal online
http://www.gypsycaravan.us/tqmw_reg3.htm
Or email Jen at the studio with questions
jen@gypsycaravan.us

Thanks for your support and hope to see you soon in Columbus!
Paulette Rees-Denis
Gypsy Caravan

Forgive us if you have received this email more than once… We just want to make
sure we get to you!

Starting August 2, Laylia's School of Belly Dancing presents a Beginner Tribal Technique series. Teacher Angie Never (Founder of Sacred Shimmy) will work to build a strong core of defined movements, then use them to dance with each other in a variety of improvisational formats. Whether you're spooked by improv, need help really connecting with other dancers, or just love tassel belts and cowrie shell falls, this class is for you.

When: Wednesdays, 7:15 to 8:15, starting August 2
Where: CAPA (Galbreath Pavilion), 55 E State St, Columbus OH
Cost: please see laylia.com/subpage1.html for pricing details

** Class Notes **
This class is open to dancers of all levels. Please wear clothes that you are comfortable stretching, dancing, and watching yourself move in. Keep in mind that some of our warm-ups will be on the floor. Form-fitting clothes will help the teacher correct your posture and technique. You may also want to bring water and a notebook, and be prepared with zills before the 4th week of class.

** Teacher Bio **
Angie Never started dancing in 1997 and performed with Firelight: Middle Eastern Images and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus before creating her tribal-focused troupe Sacred Shimmy in 2002. She has studied with Shakira and Laylia of Columbus, OH, and taken workshops from Aisha Ali, Carolena Nericcio, Jill Parker, Rachel Brice, and Heather Stants, among others. Most recently, her love of American Tribal Style bellydance took her to Portland, OR, to learn at Gypsy Caravan's Caravan Studios.
I have answered the questions below in your email with ** to start. I am
excited you your group to be there. I saw several bellydance groups and
yours is the most impressive as it does not rely on flashy glitter to show
the dance. I have mentioned your group several times at our meetings and
all are intrigued. Please let my know if you have more questions. Once
you have spoken with your members let me know what you decide...I hope it
will be yes!
Good Morning Aara,

I do remember speaking to you at the International Festival, and I am
thrilled to hear from you again about this performance. I am meeting with
the troupe tonight and I'd like to have some info! rmation to share with
them; I'm sure we will be able to attend the conference!

1. The evening begins at 9pm - what time would you like us to go on, and
for how long?
**I would like for your group to be there at 9pm for the International
Parade. Depending on the number of committments will determine start
times.

2. I am familiar with the venue, how large a room will you be using? Will
there be a raised stage and if so, how large will it be?
**We will be in the ballroom for the main event. There is a stage that is
16X20. It is raised. We will be setting it up on Friday afternoonof the
conference.

3. Will there be a sound system so we can play some recorded music? We
would bring CD's.
**We will have a sound system. But bring a portable CD player with you.

4. Will there be a backstage area we can use to prepare?
**Yes

5. Our usual fe! e is xxx per performer. However, if this is a volunteer
event, I am sure that the troupe would still be interested.
**Yes this is a volunteer event. I hope you will still consider coming.

Also, if you've got any other details to share - who else will be
performing, whether or not we will be able to see some of the show, or if
you remember anything from the International Festival that you'd like us
to
reprise for your event, please let me know.
**We have a Native American Drum called Friendly Voices who will lead the
parade and be first to dance. I have requested, but not committments yet
out to an Irish step dance group, an Equador flute group, a Chinese
dancing dragon group and a group from Ghana. Once I get committments I
can tie it all together then laydown the schedule. The time involved will
be 9 pm to 11:30 pm. With competition the next day we can not go to late
into the night. The audience will! be about 200-300 possibly more since
the conference is so centrally located this year. I will leave it up to
to chose your presentation as I enjoyed all of it!!!!

I look forward to working with you!
Andrea Bryant
Sacred Shimmy Bellydance

pls note that these are my questions and her answers, commingled. the venue is the same hotel as the Habeeba show (although i should call it the Drevala show!) so we'll be on familiar ground.

thoughts? anyone?

Here are some of the many events coming up - there's nothing like a workshop to really expand your dance horizons!

Spirit of the Tribes, Florida, April 28 – May 30
http://www.majanile.com/spirit06.html
I'm already registered for this, as is eva. There's still space, and it's near the beach, as if we needed more incentive!

Rachel Brice Intensive, Kentucky, June 2 – 6
http://www.meccadance.com/events.html
I'm on the list for this one, details are still forthcoming. check out the website and if you're interested, you can email teresa aka sri tarasita and get yourself a spot too.

Tribal Quest Northwest, Oregon, August 2 - 6
http://www.gypsycaravan.us/tqnw_main.htm
Angie and Zach have offered crash space - I'll miss this one this year, but i went in 04 and it was really awesome.

Tribal:Pura, Kentucky, September 15 – 16
http://www.meccadance.com/events.html
thisis the workshop angie and i recently went to in indiana. i highly recommend it and the Rakadu ladies are really, truly fabulous.

Triboriginal, North Carolina, September 29 – October 1
http://www.barakamundi.com/triboriginal/index.htm
So far, Emily D, Sarah, Angie and Zach and I are all planning to go to this one. It looks like there will be an embarrasment of riches, and it's only a 7 hour drive. You can't beat the price, all meals and lodging in a cabin at the campground are included.

Tribal Quest Midwest, Ohio, October 27 – 29
http://www.gypsycaravan.us/tqmw_main.htm
Volunteer Opportunities! I'm going to take full advantage. It's right in our backyard and so far there are some really great teachers confirmed. This one is going to be a real experience. Gypsy Caravan knows how to put on a great weekend of dancing.

so...if anyone wants to combine travel or hotel expenses, speak up! Sacred Shimmy will be hitting the road!
